General information only

Importing.com.au provides general information about importing goods into Australia. It is not legal, customs, tax or financial advice, and it does not create any professional relationship. The information may not apply to your specific goods, circumstances or timing.

Regulations change

Import regulations, duty rates, charges, biosecurity conditions and prohibited-goods lists change frequently — sometimes with little notice. Figures on this site (including the 10% GST rate, the AUD 1,000 low-value threshold, the 5% general duty rate and traveller allowances) were accurate against official sources at the stated update date, but you must verify current requirements with the relevant regulator before importing:

  • Australian Border Force — abf.gov.au
  • Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry — agriculture.gov.au / bicon.agriculture.gov.au
  • Australian Taxation Office — ato.gov.au

Calculators and tools

The landed cost calculator, checklist generator and goods lookup are planning aids only. Actual duty depends on your tariff classification; actual GST depends on the final assessed VoTI; penalties, excise, WET and LCT follow separate rules not fully modelled here.
